Care is Coming Home

Care=@Home!

VicarVision is supporting this important NWO project on innovative solutions for healthcare. This research project aims to help individuals with chronic mobility conditions (Rheumatoid Arthritis, Stroke and Parkinson’s Disease) to live independently at home for longer. Home-based measurements, which include AI analysis, and personalized interventions, seek to improve patients’ independence and quality of life, while considering their individual needs and home environments.

Background

The population is aging, and chronic illnesses are increasing, while there is a shortage of medical professionals. This puts strain on the costs, quality, and accessibility of our healthcare system. Dutch hospital care and elderly care could face a shortage of 98,000 employees in 2031. When medical and personal care can be shifted to home situations, this will decrease healthcare costs. This approach offers personalized care in patients’ homes, with real-time monitoring enabling early interventions.

Project Objectives

The consortium consists of 6 university medical centres and 2 universities collaborating within the caretech consortium. In addition, more than 20 user organizations and companies are participating. The goal of the research project is to gain insight into actual behaviour in the home setting of patients with impaired mobility. It will gain objective measures for mobility, pain, fatigue, and cognition. It will develop unobtrusive sensors and use AI models to gain insights into disease progress. In addition, it will develop new personalized interventions. VicarVision will contribute by using video-based analysis to derive pain and fatigue measures. Pain and fatigue result in reduced mobility and have been identified as key parameters for independent living at home for the elderly and chronic illness patients.

Expected Results

The main results of the project will be innovative remote monitoring solutions that can increase the independence of individuals with chronic mobility conditions. For example, with co-creation, the project will develop a set of tests that can measure Rheuma specific mobility at home. The multimodel input can also be used for predictive algorithms that can help determine deep-brain stimulation parameters. VicarVision will co-supervise a PhD and will contribute to the AI technology for rheumatism assessment. By contributing to this project, VicarVision can improve and extend its facial analysis tool and contribute to remote monitoring technology.
